Educating Girls About Emergency Preparedness – What to Do if Periods Come Unexpectedly in Public

Imagine being in school, on the road, or even at a public event, and suddenly your period starts without warning. For many girls, this is one of their biggest fears, and unfortunately, it has left some feeling embarrassed, ashamed, or even bullied. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Emergency preparedness is about empowering girls with confidence and knowledge. Every girl should know the simple hacks: carrying a small pouch with sanitary pads, tissue, and extra underwear; tying a sweater or jacket around the waist when stained; and confidently asking for help if needed.

Beyond the practical steps, schools, parents, and communities should also normalize discussions about menstrual emergencies. Preparedness turns fear into strength.

When girls know what to do, they move from shame to confidence, and from anxiety to empowerment. After all, periods are natural, and being ready means being unstoppable.
