In May we set out to operate on about 100 underprivileged children who have surgical conditions like hernia (umbilical, inguinal), hydrocele, undescended testes and other day case surgical conditions prevalent in children.  Our team was made up of Surgeons, medical officers. Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, and other volunteers set out by the first weekend of May to go round 15  centres in 10 Saturdays across 3 local government areas with about 1.4 million population.

So from May to July 4th, we went through different rural communities and accessed about 520 children of which about 102 were selected for free surgeries from 11-14th July 2024.  We had a partnership with, Centre of Hope Hospital, a standard hospital in Afikpo for this mission. They were happy to provide their 7 operating tables in 5 well equipped theatres with  complete sets of surgical equipment for children.   Our selected children did blood tests and ultrasound scans for free in the hospital. Some of them were admitted a day before the surgery started and they received the best of care.

From Scars to Stars

On the days of surgery, 5 Paediatric Surgeons were present and operated on about 100 children in two sessions.
Their surgical conditions ranged from umbilical hernia, inguinal hernia, undescended testes and hydrocoele.
They were placed under general Anaesthesia and were well and active a day later.

The children had post operative check in clinic a week later and there were no complications. They were happy with their parents, knowing that their lives were changed forever.
They can now pursue their dreams in perfect health and become great stars
